“Rene Clair ALL the way…” I LOVED it! I totally recognized that is was a Rene Clair movie, because it has his mark all over it. The movie was very funny, as well as full of suspense. It doubles as a comedy. The cast is full of stars like James Cagney’s dad in Yankee Doodle Dandee (forgot his name) as the alchoholic doctor, Barry Fitzgerald, Louis Hayward, C.Aubrey Smith, June Duprez, Roland Young, Mischa Auer as the crazy prince, Judith Anderson, and Richard Haydn. They were all really good in it, and I think this is the best version of all the movies of Agatha Christie’s great novel/play. Mischa Auer was really very funny as the crazy Russian Prince. I wish he hadn’t been the first to go, because it’d been fun to see what he would do throughout the movie. So all of them played their parts well, especially the Yankee Doodle Dandee guy, Richard Haydn, and Louis Hayward. He really is handsome, so I am adding him to my list of hot classic actors. Louis Hayward’s like Robert Taylor in the 1930s/James Bond. Maybe m…

Great mystery ![]() This is one of those old films that is just a pleasure to watch. The acting and the atmosphere is wonderful and you are transformed to another place and time. For anyone who loves a good mystery this is a one of the best…. great movie Abysmal DVD transfer lets down this entertaining film Improves With Each Viewing If you didn’t know any of these actors, the movie would be “fair” at best. You can bet if the story were re-done today, it would be faster moving. As it stands, its okay but a film in which 10 people are invited to an island and are systematically murdered one by one, should make for a tense thriller. Here, it’s more of a study in paranoia, but that’s interesting to view, too. I especially enjoy watching Walter Huston and Barry Fitzgerald banter back-and-forth and I was glad to see the most annoying character (can’t say) be done with first! The ending to this mystery was well-done, too, and not something you’re likely to solve. So, if you like the old classic mysteries, this should be appealing. It features an interesting cast of young and old actors, male and female. |
